Geography & History students on a nationwide tour part I

The geography students of the Gambia College on Friday the 20th of December 2019 commence a five days nationwide tour. The nationwide tour is meant to acquaint the students about the geographical features of the Gambia, the landscape, the vegetation, urbanization and its effects and also to look at the historical places in the Gambia.

Speaking to Mr. John Sonko one of the geography lecturer in the Gambia College and who is with student in the tour said that the tour is part of the course that the students are doing and the tour is organized to help students to get first hand information about what they have learned in the class about the geography of the Gambia and the history of the Gambia.

Sonko continued to say that the tour is very important as it will also help some of the students to know the country better. “As geography students and teachers to be you are expected to know your country so as to have a better understanding of what you are to teach” he said.

He further went on to say that at the end of the five days tour students are will be able to know their country better, master most of the theoretical aspect of what they have been learning in class as they will see them psychically and will be able to teach the geography of the Gambia. Sonko concludes by urging students to be more patted on congress day.

On his part the president said reviewing the constitution is very important because it is the document that will binds the entire students of the college. Therefore, it’s very important for it to be reviewed so as to keep it up to date.ted on congress day.

Fatim Janha a student and the chairlady of the organizing committee said the nationwide tour is organized to help them as students to get first hand information on what they have been learning in the classroom.

Janha further went on to say that during the course of the tour they are expecting to learning and see more geographical features of the Gambia and some historical places in the Gambia.

Also speaking to Abdoulie Cham who is a student said that the tour came at a right time and it will help them in understanding what they have learned in the class. He continued to say that the tour will also help them to know more about the country and also prepare them to teach the geography and history of the Gambia effectively.

The first point of called in the tour was at fort Bullen in Barra which was establish in 1826 by the British who needed guns ( cannons) on the north bank to complement those installed 10 years earlier at Bathurst now Banjul on the south bank.

At fort Bullen the side attendant Mr. Mballow gave a brief history of the side saying that the fort was not built to keep slave but instate it was an anti-slave place which was build to stop slave trade. He further went on to explain that the reason why the British constructed the fort at Barra was that it’s a strategic location and its where the mouth of the river Gambia is found and they can used the place to monitor and stop all ships carrying slaves.
