Background
The School of Nursing and Midwifery started training State Registered Nurses (SRN) in 1963 and State Certified Midwives (SCM) in 1968.
In1980, together with the schools of Agriculture, Education and Public Health, the school formed The Gambia College. Since its inception, it has been training State Registered Nurses and Midwives in The Gambia. It started training Male midwives in 1984 to meet the demanding needs for midwives. Graduates of this school have developed their academic careers to PhD level and are currently occupying senior positions in the delivery of health services and in academic institutions in the country and beyond. They are also making valuable contributions in nursing abroad especially in The United Kingdom and The United States of America.

Mission
Provide opportunities for students to understand their role as nurses, become acquainted with the dimensions of nursing as a profession, the health care system as an environment, and the concepts of health adaptation that affects clients.
Acquire competence to develop and perform functions that promote and maintain health as well as the prevention of illness.

Vision
The Gambia College, School of Nursing and Midwifery aims to provide an education programme to ensure that nurses and midwives who are trained and registered meet the needs of society in the 21st Century and beyond.
